Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Yamaha SZ-RR V1 is a mixed bag when it comes to its overall performance and user experience. On the positive side, it boasts a stylish design with aggressive styling, particularly noticeable in its front and rear ends, and it comes in attractive color options. The bikes handling is superb, making it nimble and steady, especially in city riding conditions. The engine, although detuned for better mileage, provides smooth performance and good low-to-mid speed acceleration. However, it lacks power at higher speeds and can feel sluggish, especially above 60 kmh. The braking system, while effective, feels underpowered, and the absence of tubeless tires is a notable drawback. Additionally, the bike suffers from vibrations at higher RPMs and has a less-than-ideal gear shifting pattern. Overall, its a good commuter bike for city use but may not be the best choice for those seeking high-speed performance or long highway rides.

Price

Pricing details and changes

The price of the Yamaha SZ-RR V1 in India can vary depending on the location and any additional features or accessories. At the time of its release, the ex-showroom price was around 63,000 to 65,000. However, the on-road price, which includes registration, insurance, and other costs, could range from 73,000 to 78,000. This pricing makes it a competitive option in the 150cc segment, especially considering its comfort-oriented design and decent performance. However, the cost of parts and maintenance can be on the higher side, which is something potential buyers should factor into their decision.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The mileage of the Yamaha SZ-RR V1 is a critical factor for many Indian buyers. According to ARAI, the bike offers an average mileage of 55 kmpl, but real-world figures can vary. Users have reported mileage ranging from 40-45 kmpl in city conditions and up to 50 kmpl on highways. This variability is due to driving conditions and riding habits. While it is not the most fuel-efficient bike in its segment, it still offers reasonable mileage, making it a viable option for daily commuting.

Expert Verdict

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Yamaha SZ-RR V1

Yamaha SZ-RR is a commuter type bike from Yamaha and the most expensive bike in SZ series. The exterior of this bike is a fine blend of style and muscular looks with its black visor, body colored cowl, stylish headlight, rear view mirrors, clear lens indicators, dual colors finishing, trendy tank shrouds with the name of the bike, silver front fender, bluish side covers, black colored five spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, muffler and engine has heat protector, wide tyre at back, dual tail lights and comfortable seats. It has dual circular pods in its instrument console and between these two; there are other indicators and an analogue fuel gauge. The right side has a tachometer and the left side shares analogue speedometer and odometer.

The bike has a powerful 153cc Air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, single cylinder, 2-valve petrol engine which gives a maximum power of 12 bhp at 7500 rpm and a maximum torque of 12.8 Nm at 4500 rpm and has a five speed manual gearbox.

The bike has a gear shifting pattern of first gear down and remaining four gears up. It reaches 0-60kmph mark in just 6 seconds and has the top speed of 105kmph. But this bike lacks in power and makes vibrations and noise after 7000 rpm. It gives a mileage of around 55 kmpl in the cities and 65 kmpl on the highways. It has a raised handle bar which gives a nice and firm grip with good support and makes the steering easy. It has a wide and comfy rear seat and is greatly spacious even with a pillion rider. Its nicely placed foot-pegs and fuel tank gives a nice, sporty and comfortable posture to the body. There is a small space under its seat for little storage.

It also has some safety features which are saree guard, pass light and strong headlight. It has 58mm of cylinder bore and 57.9mm of stoke and a chain driven type of drive system. This bike is an electric start as well as kick-start with a CDI ignition. It has a fuel tank capacity of 14 litres. Yamaha SZ-RR has disk brakes at front and drum brakes at rear. The suspension of this bike is lashed with telescopic hydraulics at front and single coil spring hydraulic shock absorbers at rear. It has wet, multiple-disk type clutch.

The bike has the ability to stay grounded on high speeds due to its kerb weight of 133kgs and wheelbase of 1320mm. It has a ground clearance of 165mm and saddle height of 802mm. There is also a passenger footrest for rear passenger's comfort. The bike has a length of 2050mm, width of 730mm and a height of 1100mm as its dimension. Yamaha SZ-RR has three shades which are Quality Blue, Quality Black and Quality Red. With the launch of SZ-RR, the SZ is now available in four variants which are Yamaha SZ, Yamaha SZ-X, Yamaha SZ-R and Yamaha SZ-S. Overall, this bike is a good combination of style, price and engine performance but is still struggling in the field of high maintenance and resale value of this bike.

One thing I don't like from this bike is its old school design (fairings) compared to pulsar fairings or even gixxer, not very modern and has a big head cowl not dimensional to the body. This bike don't have too much power and it can't even reach at 116 - 120 kmph and take note it has a 150cc engine, much better to buy 125cc instead. This bike has no match on the top speed of the Pulsar 135LS even Pulsar has smaller displacement, and no match on the mileage too, even the design, still no match for the sportier look of the Pulsar. Damn, Yamaha must have something to do with this (SZ's segment)...

Indeed the bike goes smooth in traffic condition with very less throttle at high gears but once you
cross the 65KMPH mark & u start feeling the brunt. Particularly at a speed of say 70-80 if you cut the throttle, the speed starts dropping at a significant rate. Almost as if you braked.

Perhaps a 6th gear targeting maximum power at higher speeds (say beyond 60) would have been sufficient. As said before the low speed performance is impressive & the lag is only with higher speeds.

Also the braking system is a real turnoff.

So all in all , this machine is just good for small indian cities with hardly any scope of shooting beyond 60 KMpH.

Awesome experience through out the First 60+kms Ride (Bypass, City Traffic, Broken Road and Water logged road). A complete Test for Handling, Braking and Suspensions. But my SZ RR (blue) get the A++ rank in the Test.
Looks is awesome. even Girls are staring from Auto Rikshaws and Taxi. Good acceleration and stability. But I faced difficulty changing the Gear. May be every cons will be gone after 1st Servicing.
