Recent news and announcements

Despite recent rumors, Yamaha has clarified that the RX 100 will not be relaunched in the near future. The company is focusing on the premium segment with bikes above 150cc, as announced by Motofumi Shitara, the newly appointed chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group. This move shifts attention away from the mass market segment where the RX 100 was once a staple. I believe this strategy aligns with the current market trends but will surely disappoint many RX 100 enthusiasts.

Speculations suggest that if the Yamaha RX 100 were to be relaunched, it would feature updated technology such as fuel injection, ABS, and digital instruments. The bike would retain its retro design while incorporating modern features to meet current performance and safety standards. It is expected to be priced competitively between Rs 1.25 lakh and Rs 1.50 lakh. I think this blend of old and new could make the RX 100 a compelling option for both nostalgic riders and new buyers.
October 15, 2024
The new Yamaha RX 100, if it were to be launched, would likely come with a four-stroke engine in the 225cc range, a significant leap from the original 98cc two-stroke engine. This engine would offer over 20 BHP and around 19.9 Nm of torque, making it more powerful than its competitors. The bike would also feature modern elements like LED headlights, a fully digital instrument console, and possibly alloy wheels. I believe this power boost and modern features would make the new RX 100 a strong contender in the market.

The design of the potential new Yamaha RX 100 is expected to strike a balance between nostalgia and modernity. It would retain classic elements like a round headlamp, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, and a flat seat, while incorporating modern features such as a digital meter console with turn-by-turn navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. The bike would also have improved suspension and safety features like ABS. I think this balance of old and new would appeal to a wide range of riders.
September 14, 2024
Yamaha has not officially confirmed the price or launch date of the new RX 100, but market expectations suggest it could be priced between Rs 1.25 lakh and Rs 1.50 lakh. The launch is speculated to be sometime in late 2025 or early 2026, although these dates are not confirmed. I believe the pricing and launch timing will be crucial in determining the bikes success in the competitive Indian market.

Vehicle Overview
The king of Indian streets at one time, the legendary Yamaha RX100 can amaze the riders and the onlookers in the same way as KTM 200 Duke. The 98cc motorcycle was good for 11 BHP and 10.39 Nm of torque while weighs just 103 kg. It claimed a top speed of 100 kmph while was quite unsafe because of just drum brakes at both ends. It was discontinued due to change in emission norms, as RX 100 was a 2-stroke motorcycle. As of now, Yamaha has no plans to re-launch the RX 100 in India, and you can only buy it from used bike market or from online portals like OLX and Quickr.

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Yamaha RX 100

The Yamaha RX 100 stands as one of the most iconic motorcycles in Indian automotive history, renowned for its lightweight build, brisk performance, and enduring legacy.

The Yamaha RX 100 stands as one of the most iconic motorcycles in Indian automotive history, renowned for its lightweight build, brisk performance, and enduring legacy. Introduced in the mid-1980s, the RX 100 quickly became a household name, captivating a generation of riders and establishing itself as a symbol of speed, reliability, and style.

Historical Context and Launch:

The RX 100 was launched in India in November 1985, following Yamaha’s collaboration with the Escorts Group. Its introduction was a strategic move after the lukewarm reception of the Raj doot 350, as Yamaha sought to create a product that would appeal to the growing demand for small-capacity, efficient motorcycles in India. The RX 100 was based on the RX-S variant rather than the original RX100 or RS100DX, and it was assembled in India from knock-down kits imported from Japan.

Design Philosophy and Build:

Yamaha engineered the RX 100 as a lightweight, stylish, and robust motorcycle. Its minimalist, no-nonsense design featured a single-piece seat, classic round headlamp, chrome-finished exhaust, and simple analog dials. The bike’s compact dimensions—measuring 1965 mm in length, 740 mm in width, and 1040 mm in height—contributed to its nimble handling and ease of use in urban environments. The kerb weight of just 103 kg made it exceptionally agile, allowing riders to maneuve through traffic with ease.

Engine and Performance:

At the heart of the RX 100 was a 98cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder, two-stroke engine. This unit delivered a maximum power output of around 11 PS at 7500 rpm and peak torque of 10.39 Nm at 6500 rpm, paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. While these figures may seem modest by today’s standards, the RX 100’s power-to-weight ratio was unmatched in its class, resulting in sprightly acceleration and a top speed that thrilled enthusiasts.

The two-stroke engine’s distinctive exhaust note became a signature sound on Indian roads. The RX 100’s performance was further enhanced by its lightweight frame, making it a favorite among drag racers and modifiers. Tuned versions of the RX 100 could complete a standing quarter-mile in about 14 seconds, a remarkable feat for a 100cc motorcycle.

Handling, Suspension, and Braking:

The RX 100’s chassis was designed for nimble handling and stability. It featured telescopic front forks and twin rear shock absorbers, providing a comfortable ride over varied road conditions. Braking was managed by 130mm drum brakes at both ends, which, while basic, required skill and finesse from spirited riders. The bike’s 1245 mm wheelbase and 136 mm ground clearance offered a balanced combination of agility and stability.

Features and Ergonomics:

The RX 100 was equipped with a straightforward analog instrument cluster, including a speedometer and odometer. The single-piece seat and upright handlebars ensured a comfortable riding posture for both the rider and pillion. The fuel tank had a capacity of 10 litters, offering a practical range for daily commuting.

Cultural Impact and Legacy:

What truly set the RX 100 apart was its cultural resonance. It became a status symbol for young riders in the late 1980s and 1990s, admired for its brisk acceleration, reliability, and ease of maintenance. The bike’s affordability and robust performance made it a favorite among both city commuters and racing enthusiasts. Its simple mechanicals allowed for extensive customization, with owners frequently modifying car brakes, exhausts, and suspension systems to extract even more performance.

The RX 100’s cult following persists decades after its discontinuation in 1996, a result of stricter emission norms that rendered two-stroke engines obsolete. Even today, well-maintained RX 100s command premium prices in the second-hand market, and restoration projects are common among collectors and enthusiasts.

Modern Revival and Future Prospects:

Recognizing the RX 100’s enduring appeal, Yamaha has announced plans to revive the legendary nameplate. The new iteration is expected to blend retro-inspired styling with modern technology, including a more powerful four-stroke engine, advanced braking systems (such as ABS), LED lighting, digital instrumentation, and smart connectivity features like Bluetooth integration. The upcoming model is rumored to feature a displacement of at least 150cc or even up to 225.9cc, promising to deliver a similar lightweight, high-performance experience while meeting contemporary emission standards.

As Yamaha prepares to reintroduce the RX 100 with modern features, the legacy of this classic bike is set to inspire a new generation of riders while rekindling nostalgia among long-time fans.
