Expert opinion and recommendation

The Harley-Davidson Street 750 is a Great bike. It's not the biggest Harley, but it's got style. The engine has enough power for city riding, but it's not a highway cruiser. It's comfortable with an easy-to-reach handlebar and a low seat. The brakes are good, and it's not too heavy. If you want a Harley on a budget and mostly ride in the city, it's worth a look.

Harley-Davidson has discontinued the Street 750 in India, marking the end of an era for this popular entry-level motorcycle. This decision follows the companys strategic shift and partnership with Hero MotoCorp. The Street 750 was known for its affordability and handling. I think this is a significant loss for Harley-Davidson enthusiasts in India, but it opens up opportunities for new models.

Hero MotoCorp signed a partnership with Harley-Davidson, which included the distribution and sales of Harley-Davidson bikes in India. This partnership marked a significant shift in Harley-Davidsons strategy in the Indian market. The Harley-Davidson Street 750 was updated to comply with the BS6 emission norms, making it one of the first Harley-Davidson models to do so. Priced at Rs. 5.47 lakh (ex-showroom), this limited edition model was the first from Harley-Davidson to meet BS6 emission norms. Only 300 units were produced to maintain exclusivity. I believe this special edition was a great way to celebrate a decade in the Indian market.

Despite its popularity, the bike was discontinued in January 2021 due to various factors. This article delves into the Street 750's features, market performance, and its overall legacy.

Key Takeaways

  • The Street 750 was Harley-Davidson's most affordable model in India.
  • It featured a 749cc engine and a unique cruiser design.
  • Production ended in January 2021 due to the closure of the Bawal plant.

  • Despite criticisms, the engine was praised for its performance and reliability.

Overview of the Discontinued Harley-Davidson Street 750

Brief History of the Street 750

The Harley-Davidson Street 750 was introduced as a more affordable option for riders in India. Launched in 2019, it quickly became popular among new motorcycle enthusiasts. This model was the first BS6 motorcycle from Harley in India, making it a significant entry in the market.

Reasons for Discontinuation

Unfortunately, the Street 750 was discontinued in January 2021 due to the closure of Harley's Bawal plant in Haryana. The decision was part of a larger strategy to streamline operations and focus on more premium models. The affordability of the Street 750 was overshadowed by the brand's shift in focus.

Impact on the Market

The discontinuation of the Street 750 left a gap in the entry-level cruiser segment. It was one of the most budget-friendly Harleys available, and its absence has made it harder for new riders to enter the Harley world. The market has seen a rise in interest for other brands, as riders look for alternatives that offer similar features and pricing.

Key Features of the Harley-Davidson Street 750

Engine Specifications

The Harley-Davidson Street 750 is powered by a 749cc Revolution-X V-twin engine. This engine is known for its smooth performance, producing 49 PS of power and 60 Nm of torque. It offers a strong low-end pull, making it enjoyable to ride in both city traffic and on highways.

Design and Aesthetics

The design of the Street 750 is simple yet striking. It features a long, peanut-shaped fuel tank and a low seat height, which makes it easy to handle. The bike has a blacked-out theme that gives it a unique look. While it may not be as flashy as other Harley models, its understated style appeals to many riders.

Technology and Instrumentation

In terms of technology, the Street 750 comes with a semi-digital instrument cluster. This includes an analog speedometer and a small LCD display for essential information like the odometer and trip meter. The bike also features an Auto Headlamp ON (AHO) system, which ensures the headlight is always on for safety. Though it lacks some modern features, it still provides the basics needed for a good riding experience.

Comparing the Street 750 with Competitors

Royal Enfield Interceptor 650

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 stands out as a strong competitor to the Harley-Davidson Street 750. With its classic design and powerful engine, it appeals to many riders. The Interceptor features a 648cc twin-cylinder engine that delivers a smooth ride and impressive performance. Its retro style and comfortable seating make it a popular choice among motorcycle enthusiasts.

Kawasaki Vulcan S

Another notable rival is the Kawasaki Vulcan S. This bike offers a unique blend of cruiser comfort and sporty performance. The Vulcan S is powered by a 649cc parallel-twin engine, which provides a lively ride. Its adjustable seat height and modern design make it accessible for a wide range of riders, making it a strong contender in this segment.

Triumph Street Twin

Lastly, the Triumph Street Twin presents a compelling alternative. This motorcycle combines a retro aesthetic with modern technology. Its 900cc engine offers a delightful riding experience, making it both fun and practical. The Street Twin's lightweight frame and agile handling make it an excellent choice for both new and experienced riders. Overall, while the Street 750 has its own charm, these competitors offer unique features that cater to different preferences.

Market Performance and Sales

Sales Figures Over the Years

The Harley-Davidson Street 750 was introduced in India in 2014, aiming to attract new riders to the brand. Over the years, it saw a steady increase in sales, especially among younger buyers looking for a stylish entry into the motorcycle world. However, sales began to decline as competition grew and consumer preferences shifted.

Market Reception

When it first launched, the Street 750 received positive feedback for its design and performance. Riders appreciated its lightweight feel and urban-friendly features. Yet, as newer models from competitors emerged, the Street 750 struggled to maintain its appeal in a rapidly changing market.

Impact of Discontinuation on Sales

The discontinuation of the Street 750 in 2020 left a noticeable gap in Harley-Davidson's lineup, particularly in the entry-level segment. Many potential buyers were left searching for alternatives, which impacted the brand's overall sales in India. The decision to stop production was seen as a move to refocus on higher-end models, but it also raised concerns about Harley's ability to attract new riders in the future.

User Reviews and Feedback

Positive Reviews

Many riders have shared their love for the Harley-Davidson Street 750, praising its engine performance and smooth ride. Users often mention how the bike feels powerful and comfortable, making it a joy to ride. One enthusiastic owner described it as an "absolute must-have for every bike enthusiast," highlighting the thrill it brings to the experience of riding.

Common Criticisms

Despite the positive feedback, some users have pointed out areas for improvement. A few riders felt that the styling could have been more appealing, and there were mentions of a lack of advanced features. Additionally, some reviews noted that the brakes could be better, which is something potential buyers should consider.

Overall User Satisfaction

Overall, the Harley-Davidson Street 750 has received a solid rating of 4.4 out of 5 from users. This indicates a high level of satisfaction among riders, even with the noted drawbacks. Many still feel proud to own this bike, appreciating its unique character and the brand's legacy.

Future of Harley-Davidson in India

Partnership with Hero MotoCorp

Harley-Davidson has teamed up with Hero MotoCorp, a major player in the Indian motorcycle market. This partnership aims to strengthen Harley's presence in India, focusing on high-end models rather than entry-level bikes. This shift marks a new chapter for the brand in the country.

Focus on Premium Motorcycles

The company is now concentrating on premium motorcycles, which will be imported as Completely Built Units (CBUs). This means that the bikes will be fully assembled before they reach Indian shores, allowing Harley to offer more luxurious options to its customers.

Potential New Models

While the Street 750 is no longer available, there are hints that Harley-Davidson may introduce new models tailored for the Indian market. These models could cater to the growing demand for premium motorcycles, ensuring that the brand remains relevant and appealing to motorcycle enthusiasts.

Legacy of the Harley-Davidson Street 750

Cultural Impact

The Harley-Davidson Street 750 has left a mark on the motorcycle scene, especially in India. It opened the doors for many new riders who dreamed of owning a Harley but found the larger models too intimidating. This bike became a symbol of accessibility for many enthusiasts.

Influence on Motorcycle Design

With its simple yet effective design, the Street 750 showcased a different approach for Harley-Davidson. It emphasized a minimalist style that appealed to younger riders. The low seat height and cruiser design made it easy to handle, setting a trend for future models.

Memorable Moments and Events

The Street 750 was often seen at various motorcycle events and rallies, where it gained a loyal following. Riders appreciated its performance and comfort, making it a popular choice for both city rides and longer journeys. Its presence at these gatherings helped solidify its place in the hearts of many motorcycle fans.
