Expert opinion and recommendation

The Yamaha FZ-S V1 is a standout in the Indian motorcycle market, particularly for its urban commuting prowess. This bike excels in city traffic with its robust 153cc engine, producing 13.8 BHP at 7500 rpm and 13.6 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm. The handling is exceptional, thanks to the broad 14060-R17 rear tyre and 10080-R17 front tyre, which provide superb grip even on wet roads. The monocross rear suspension and well-spaced gear ratios make it agile and fun to ride, especially in twisty roads. However, it lacks in top-end performance and long-distance comfort, with the seats becoming uncomfortable after extended rides. The fully digital instrument console, though a bit dated, is functional. Overall, the FZ-S V1 is a great choice for those who prioritize city riding and stylish design, but it may not be the best for long highway trips.

Recent news and announcements

Yamaha India has stricken the carburetted versions of the FZ-S and Fazer, along with their scooter, the Ray, from their rosters. Just recently, Yamaha has chosen to discontinue the carburetted version of their ever-popular FZ-S, as well as its semi-faired cousin, the Fazer, in India.

Yamaha India has recently discontinued the carburetted versions of the FZ-S and Fazer, marking the end of an era for these popular models. This move is part of the companys shift towards more environmentally friendly and efficient fuel-injected engines. I believe this change will appeal to buyers looking for better mileage and performance.

With the implementation of GST in July 2017, Yamaha dropped the prices of the FZ series across India. The FZ now retailed at Rs 81,040 (ex-Delhi), a reduction of Rs 571 from the previous price. This price drop made the bike more competitive in the market. I believe this move helped maintain the FZs popularity among budget-conscious buyers.

The Yamaha FZ-S Battle Green Special Edition, although now discontinued, was a unique offering with its black and battle green graphics. This bike had a 153cc single-cylinder engine, a 5-speed gearbox, and a top speed of 115 kmph. I think the special edition colors added a nice touch to an already popular model.

In July 2014, Yamaha launched the new FZ and FZ-S models in India, featuring a newly developed 150cc fuel-injected engine that improved fuel economy by 14% and enhanced acceleration. These bikes also boasted a lightweight frame and new body design, making them more appealing to the Indian market. I think these updates significantly boosted the bikes appeal to young riders.

Pricing details and changes

When the Yamaha FZ-S V1 was launched, its ex-showroom price in India was around 70,000 to 80,000, depending on the region. However, since this model is no longer in production, prices for used or pre-owned models will vary. On average, you can expect to pay between 40,000 to 60,000 for a well-maintained used FZ-S V1. The on-road price, including registration, insurance, and other costs, would have been around 90,000 to 1,10,000 when new. For used models, these additional costs will be lower, but still significant. Its crucial to inspect the bike thoroughly and negotiate based on its condition and mileage.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Yamaha FZ-S V1 offers a mileage that is somewhat lower compared to other 150cc bikes in India. According to ARAI, the bike achieves a mileage of 45 kmpl, but real-world mileage reported by owners is around 40 kmpl. This is partly due to the bikes focus on performance and the larger tyre sizes. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient option, the FZ-S V1s mileage is still reasonable for its segment, making it a viable choice for daily commuting.

Vehicle Overview
Yamaha FZ-S Version 1.0 is a street bike that resembled a big section of Indian performance bikes on road few years back. The first version was not as sharp as the current version but still, an ideal street bike design is nothing different from the FZS version 1.0. It is powered by a 153cc, air cooled engine producing 13.8 BHP at 7500 rpm and 13.6 Nm at 6000 rpm. The gearbox used on the FZS is a 5-speed manual unit. It came equipped with a 267 mm front disc while the rear still remains 130 mm drum unit on the FZ series. It rivals Suzuki Gixxer and Bajaj Pulsar series in the Indian market.

Yamaha has once revolutionized the Indian street biking lovers by presenting their modern street fighters named FZ16 and FZS. The FZ16 is a basic machine, with the FZS being more cosmetically updated. The crown on its headlight just ruled everywhere at the time when there was no competition for the segment Yamaha created and till date, the impact on the mind of people can be clearly seen. Yamaha FZS v1.0 is marvellous, true masterpiece of its time and deserves the fame it had at that time.

Yamaha FZS v1.0 is marvellous, a true masterpiece of its time and deserves the fame it had at that time.

At the time of its launch, it was different. The difference was all due to its physique, the body styling it had been present in no other. Every bike looked like an undernourished person before a bodybuilder. The no frame headlight and that too with an aggressive design is the first of its kind. The muscular tank and the massive tyre sizes were all new for the Indian motorcycle industry. Yamaha created a really different machine at that time, which even until today is the most loved design in an entry-level street bike. 9 out of 10 say it to be a better design than the v2.0, making it a really lovable bike.

The fully digital instrument console on the Yamaha FZS v1.0 is quite different from the other digital displays of that time. The tachometer is an analogue-inspired digital display, which showed the rpm in small blocks of rectangular symbols, which was very pleasing at that moment. The screen shows the digital speedometer and odometer, with a switch for changing and clearing the trip distances out of it. It is a black and white digital console, with an orange light in the background at night.

The v1.0 has a brute engine, which focuses more on higher values, but lacked some of the refinement. It was one of the few 150 cc bikes which could cross the 100 kmph mark easily and much smoother. The 153 cc, single cylinder engine uses carburettor as its fuel system and produces 13.8 BHP @ 7500 rpm and 13.6 NM @ 6000 rpm. The performance is outstanding, much refined than the generation of Pulsars of that time. The engine pulls a massive 140/60-R17 tyre, which at that time was the largest one in an Indian made motorcycle. Even the Pulsar 220 was missing on this tyre size and this showed the domination Yamaha made on each mind at that time. Road grip is excellent and it soon became the favourite of insane riders and stuntmen.

The Yamaha FZS is having a 267 mm disc brake at the front with a 100/80-R17 tyre. This was the ideal size of a sports bike's rear tyre at that time. The rear has a drum brake and the whole system made Yamaha FZS a very safe ride. The suspension at the front is the telescopic forks whereas the rear has a monoshock suspension, which was also counted as a very attractive and luxury feature at that time. The ride control is awesome and the handling was far better than any other bike in its segment at that time.

The Bajaj FZS Version 1.0 is the original naked street bike which remained undisputed for almost half a decade.
