- Alpha is an entry level scooter that carries a well finished design and excellent color options. It uses a 113 cc, air cooled engine with blue core technology. The engine is good for 7 BHP at 7500 rpm and 8.1 Nm at 5000 rpm. It comes mated to an automatic gearbox. The scooter weighs 104 kg and claims a seat height of 775 mm. Unfortunately, it is carrying a ground clearance of 128 mm. The scooter rivals Honda Activa, Hero Maestro Edge and Mahindra Gusto in its segment.

India Yamaha Motor or IYM is a subsidiary of a world renowned Japanese giant Yamaha Motor Company Limited which was founded in 2008 as a joint venture with Mitsui. Recently, IYM unveiled and launched a new unisex scooter for the Indian market, Yamaha Alpha on February 5, 2014 just ahead of the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Alpha is like a big brother of Yamaha Ray with the same mechanical but a different design theme, targeted primarily for family customers. The company now aims to sell a total of 6 lakh units in 2014 from 4.6 lakh units in 2013 while expecting the potential of scooter market in India to reach 3.6 million units in 2014. It is also investing INR 1,500 crore in the manufacturing and development of a new plant near Chennai which will be operational by the end of 2014. Coming back to Alpha, the company plans to sell about 2,00,000 units of this scooter in its first year. The scooter is manufactured by India Yamaha Motor and will be marketed by Yamaha Motor India Sales (YMIS) and will compete with the likes of TVS Jupiter, Honda Activa and Suzuki Access.
Yamaha Alpha has got a beautiful design with some remarkable features to attract a lot of attention which includes a better illuminated handlebar mounted headlight, black rear view mirrors, an easy-to-grip grab bar with a good hip hold which features aluminum with paint finish, a large footboard with a simplified foot placement area and a convenient hook, a flat, long and comfortable seat with an added hip area for the tandem rider, fairing-mounted turn indicators, elegant side panels, self-start, steel pipe underbone type chassis frame, 10-inch wheels with 90/100 section tires at front and rear, easy leg reach, a beautiful tail light and a stylish silencer.
This scooter has a length of 1,795mm, a width of 675mm and a height of 1,124mm as its dimensions and a large wheelbase of 1,270mm for a comfy and stable ride. It has a good ground clearance of 128mm for a bump-free ride and a seat height of 775mm for simple leg reach. It has a fuel tank capacity of 5.20liters and a dry weight of 104kgs along with a water-proof under seat storage space of 21liters with the tail area of this storage space is designed to hold on-board tools and small items such as a waste cloth.
Yamaha Alpha has got a 113cc, 4-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, 2-valves SOHC based engine with BLUE CORE technology, it develops maximum power of 7 bhp at 7,500 rpm and maximum torque of 8.1 Nm at 5,000 rpm and is mated with a continuous variable transmission to give a SIAM-certified company claimed mileage of 66kmpl. The engine has a bore and stroke of 50mm and 57.8mm respectively, a 9.2:1 compression ratio, a pressure diaphragm type carburettor fuel supply system, a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) system and a dry and automatic centrifugal clutch.
Yamaha Alpha has got 130mm diameter drum brakes at front and rear. It has a telescopic suspension at front and a unit type suspension at rear. It has a castor and trail of 27.5-degrees and 103mm respectively. The scooter also has a stylish and perfectly illuminated meter console with an analogue fuel gauge and speedometer, a pass light and a low fuel indicator.
