Expert opinion and recommendation

The Mahindra Gusto 125 VX, although discontinued since April 2020, had its share of strengths and weaknesses. On the positive side, it is known for its toughness and durability, making it a reliable choice for Indian roads. The scooter features a 124.6cc, 4-stroke engine that produces 8.7 PS of power and 10 Nm of torque, which is decent for its segment. However, users have reported that the scooter struggles with high-speed performance and can be sluggish when needing to accelerate quickly. The Gusto 125 VX also boasts several convenient features such as a height-adjustable seat, find-me lamps, and a remote flip key, which enhance its usability. Despite some issues with long-term reliability and service accessibility, the Gusto 125 VX remains a solid option for those seeking a robust and feature-rich scooter, albeit with some performance limitations.

Recent news and announcements

The Mahindra Gusto 125 VX has been discontinued in the Indian market as of April 2020, marking the end of its production run. This decision was likely due to declining sales and the need to focus on other models. I think this move could be a strategic step for Mahindra to consolidate their product lineup.
April 1, 2020
The Mahindra Gusto 125 VX had a kerb weight of 120 kg and a fuel tank capacity of 6 litres, which was decent for its class. The scooter also boasted a mileage of 50 kmpl, making it a fuel-efficient option for daily commuters.
February 3, 2016
The Gusto 125 VX was priced competitively, with the ex-showroom price starting from Rs. 55,770 for the VX variant and Rs. 58,137 for the VX CBS variant. This pricing strategy was aimed at making the scooter accessible to a wider market.
February 3, 2016
Mahindra offered a 5-year or 40,000 km basic warranty for the Gusto 125 VX, providing customers with peace of mind regarding maintenance and repairs. I think this warranty period was quite generous and added to the scooters appeal.
February 3, 2016
The scooter was equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and had a top speed of 80 kmph. It also featured telescopic suspension with air spring at the front and coil type, hydraulic mono shock absorber at the rear, ensuring a smooth ride. I think the suspension setup was one of the strong points of this scooter.

Pricing details and changes

The Mahindra Gusto 125 VX was priced competitively in the Indian market before its discontinuation. The ex-showroom price ranged from Rs. 55,770 for the base model to Rs. 58,137 for the CBS variant. When considering on-road prices, which include additional costs such as registration, insurance, and other local taxes, the total cost would have been around Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 70,000, depending on the state and local regulations. This pricing positioned the Gusto 125 VX as a mid-range scooter, offering a balance of features and affordability. However, since the model is no longer in production, these prices are more of a historical reference for those considering purchasing a used unit.

This fuel efficiency makes it a viable option for daily commuters who are concerned about running costs. However, actual mileage can vary based on riding conditions, maintenance, and driving habits. For users prioritizing fuel economy, the Gusto 125 VX offers a decent balance between performance and efficiency.

Expert Verdict

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Mahindra Gusto 125 VX

12 Jan, 16 07:22 AM

Mahindra recently unveiled the more powerful, more stylish version of its existing scooter, Gusto 125 in India. The refreshed scooter shares the same underpinnings, making little changes to the overall body structure. It offers a variety of new shades and first in-segment features, making it a great deal if priced successfully below the market leader like Activa 125 and Suzuki Access 125.

Design and Style

The new Gusto 125 shares the same curves and edges with the younger Gusto. The new part comes mostly to the front part of the scooter as it uses a different pattern of false air intakes than the older model. Six intakes and chrome stripe on the side panels clearly differentiates the newcomer. The Gusto comes with a conservative body style and uses matching color inserts on the new dual tone shades on the 125 cc variant.

Instrument Console

The console is simply beautiful, displaying every little bit of the required values through its analogue speedometer and odometer. The fuel gauge is again analogue, with whole of the console enclosed in a silver casing, dividing it into 3 different sections. The third section houses the LED indications for turn indicator and others.

Engine and Gearbox

The 125 cc engine on the new Gusto is much more refined than the older engine even after using the same air cooled and carburetor fed fuel system. The motor is good for 8.5 BHP @ 7,000 rpm and 10 NM @ 5,500 rpm. It is a great option for everyday riding and comes with CVT for more relaxed automatic gearshifts. It is expected to deliver a company claimed figure of 60 kmpl.

Brakes and Suspension

Gusto 125 uses the same 130 mm drum brakes for the front as well as the rear wheel. It could have been better if Mahindra used a disc brake instead of the front drum unit as it would have given a more upmarket look and feature to the scooter. It uses telescopic suspension at the front and hydraulic coil type at the rear.

Exclusive Features

Mahindra offers a lot of features which are exclusive to the Gusto only. It comes with a height adjustable seat, making it easy for the rider to adjust the seat height between 735-770 mm. It comes with a car like flip key and find me lamps for finding Gusto easily in large parking lots. It comes with quick storage under the instrument console and even provides tubeless tyres measuring 12 inch.

Shades and Variants

Mahindra Gusto 125 is available in 2 variants: DX and VX, making the scooter available in Orange Rush, Bolt White, Monarch Black and Regal Red shade.
