Recent news and announcements

Bajaj Auto has recently pulled the plugs on the CT100 commuter bike in India, marking the end of an era for this popular entry-level motorcycle. This decision comes as the company focuses on other models and market segments. I believe this move will impact the budget-conscious buyer segment, but it also opens up opportunities for Bajaj to introduce new models.

Bajaj  Auto has discontinued its most affordable motorcycle, the CT 100, in India. The dealers have stopped receiving stock of the bike after the company suspended its production a few weeks back.

The Bajaj CT100 and Platina 100 models received a price hike in 2021 due to rising production costs and other market factors. The price increase was up to Rs 3,904, reflecting the economic challenges faced by the automotive industry. I believe these price hikes are inevitable in such economic conditions but can affect consumer purchasing decisions.

The Bajaj CT100 range saw a significant price cut a few years ago, with the base variant, CT100 B, now starting from Rs. 30,714 (ex-showroom Delhi). This reduction was part of Bajajs strategy to make the bike more competitive in the commuter segment. I think this price adjustment was a smart move to attract more buyers in a highly competitive market.
March 29, 2018
Bajaj Auto launched the CT 100 Electric Start variant in India, priced at Rs. 38,806 (ex-showroom, Maharashtra) and Rs. 41,997 (ex-showroom, Delhi). This addition provided consumers with the convenience of an electric start, making the bike more appealing to a wider audience. I believe this feature upgrade was a necessary step to keep the CT100 relevant in the market.

Overview

Bajaj CT 100 was one of India's best-selling motorcycles in the Indian market. It was discontinued in 2006 due to some issues. But the company relaunched it in 2015 to serve the country's common masses once more. The bike was discontinued once more in April 2022. The bike was more fuel efficient and had a nice appearance. The Bajaj CT 100 was powered by a Digital CDI ignition system and reached a top speed of 90 km/h. The manufacturer claimed an 89.5 km/h fuel efficiency, which was one of the best in the country.

Bajaj CT 100 Design and Style

Bajaj CT 100 BS6 was a sturdy-looking motorcycle with a strong presence on the road. It had an appealing design that is not excessive by any means. The design was simple yet modern, and it checked all the boxes for a traditional motorcycle. The curvy contour line on the fuel tank and the sporty graphics gave the bike a muscular appearance. While the black tinted visor around the headlight added to the vehicle's premium appearance. Bajaj CT 100 was also outfitted with five-spoke blacked-out alloy wheels, and many premium inserts.

Aside from the features, the CT 100 had decals and highlights on the side panels and fuel tank. Bajaj offered BS6 CT 100 in three different paint schemes. Gloss Ebony Black with Blue Decals, Matte Olive Green with Yellow Decals, and Gloss Flame Red with Bright Red Decals.

The bike had a stylish yet subtle tail lamp with a black mudguard with an integrated rectangular reflector at the back. It also had a silver-coloured muffler cover that adds a premium touch to the motorcycle. And a black-coloured grab rail was present on it for added convenience.

The Bajaj Ct 100 had a length of 1,945 mm and a height of 1,072 mm. The motorcycle was 752 mm wide. The motorcycle came with a 1,235 mm wheelbase and a seat height of 800 mm. This made the CT 100 suitable for both tall and short riders. The CT 100 had a good ground clearance of 170 mm. This made it capable of overcoming almost all types of speed bumps and rough roads found in rural areas. The fuel tank capacity on the motorcycle was 10.5 litres. Furthermore, the bike was only about 115 kg which made it very easy to control and ride in traffic.

Bajaj CT 100 Engine and Gearbox

A BS6-compliant 99.27cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine powered the Bajaj CT 100. At 7500 RPM, this BS6 motor produced 7.9 PS of max power and 8.34 Nm of peak torque. The engine came coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission. It had an electronic fuel injection system that improved the motorcycle's fuel economy. The previous version of the Bajaj CT 100 came equipped with a carburettor. The addition of fuel injection improved throttle response and fuel efficiency in the later version.

The Bajaj CT 100 performed well in the low and mid-range. The 99.27cc engine was responsive and produced adequate power. It also performed well during city commutes. While most entry-level commuters top out at 80 to 85 km/h, the CT100 could reach 90 km/h. But at speeds ranging from 40-60 km/h, the bike feels smooth and comfortable to ride. Riders experienced fewer vibrations through the footpegs and handlebar. The motorcycle achieved a superior figure of 73 to 89.5 km/l in real-world riding conditions.

Bajaj CT 100 Suspension, Brakes and Tyres

Bajaj CT 100 was built around a single tubular down tube and a lower cradle frame. It had a hydraulic telescopic suspension in the front and a Spring-in-Spring (SNS) shock absorber in the rear. It performed well on rough terrain and provided excellent comfort and ride quality. A 130 mm drum brake at the front and a 110mm drum brake at the rear performed braking duties on this commuter motorcycle.

The front brake was well-known for its excellent feedback and bite. The rear drum brake was also impressive. The Combined Braking System (CBS) was also included with the motorcycle. The CBS system applies the front brake to stop or slow the scooter while you engage the rear drum brake. This allows for more efficient braking and helps the rider come to a complete stop.

Bajaj offered the CT 100 with tubed front and rear tyres. It came with 2.75x17 41 P front and 3.00x17 50 P rear tyres. These tyres offered good resistance to aquaplaning. And they provided adequate traction on rough roads. TVS could have done a better job by offering tubeless fitments.

Because of its strong suspension setup, the motorcycle also handles well on rough terrain. All the components, including the footpeg, fuel tank, and handle, are quiet. Bajaj CT 100 met the BS6 comfort and ride quality standards in its reign.

Key Features of Bajaj CT 100

At the front of the Bajaj CT 100 was a bright and powerful 12V-35/35W headlight. It delivered a steady beam of light and provided good visibility at night and in low-light conditions. The twin rear-view mirrors kept the rider aware and alert of his surroundings, reducing the possibility of a mishap. The bike received the world's first Spring-In-Spring (SNS) suspension at the rear. It helped to elevate the level of comfort. These safety and convenience features made it a true and dependable companion in the Indian commuter motorcycle segment.

Bajaj CT 100 Competitors

Before discontinuation, Bajaj CT 100 competed against Bajaj Platina 110, Honda CD 110 Dream, Hero Splendor+, Hero Passion Pro, Hero Super Splendor, and TVS Radeon 110 in the Indian market.
