Lohri is a festival which celebrates the season of harvesting in the Punjab region of India. This event is meant to enjoy the harvesting of the crop of Rabi in the farms. It also showcases the end of the winter weather here.
In many other parts of the nation, Lohri is also known to come after the festival of Makar Sankranti. It initiates a bonfire at night time and it is the core tradition of the way in which Lohri is celebrated. In fact, certain folks also prepare for the activities of dance competitions; as well as, and they enjoy singing shows near their homes with their neighbourhood and friends.
Also, Lohri is a pious and auspicious day for the ones who have gotten married recently; and so the newly-wed couples participate in the customs of Lohri and they even seek blessings from the elder family members.

So they have a lot of fun and zest to make the most of this special festival Punjabis.
Many people are unaware that the word Lohri is derived from ‘Tilohri,’ where ‘til’ refers to sesame and ‘rorhi’ refers to jaggery/gur. The festival was eventually shortened to Lohri. Both of these food ingredients are thought to help cleanse the body, bringing renewed energy for the New Year. As a way of expressing gratitude to nature, foods such as jaggery, gajak, and til ki chikki are offered to the fire.
The legend tells a narrative that dates back to Akbar’s reign. The storey goes that in Punjab, there was a man named Dulla Bhatti who was a Muslim robber. Despite the fact that he was a robber, the man had a good reputation in the area. His good reputation stemmed from the fact that he used to rescue Hindu girls from human trafficking.
Not only that, but the man also arranged for the marriages of the rescued girls. His incredible manoeuvres made him famous throughout the Punjab region.
To commemorate this, the boys sing the songs with a ‘ho’ exclamation after each line. So, here are a few lines from a popular song sung on the eve of Lohri.

Lohri is undoubtedly an indigenous ritual which has risen from the foothills of the Himalayan areas. Here, in these colder regions, winter is mostly the season which rules; and these days are much colder in comparison to the rest of the parts of the Arabian Peninsula.
Also, as the crop of Rabi season shows its starting and blooming time, the Hindus and the Sikhs light up bonfires in their yards; and they socialize around this bonfire for a whole week. On the other hand, Punjabis also celebrate this festival till the end of the winter season in the Punjab state.
Furthermore, Lohri even shows the northwards movement of the Sun in the galaxy system. In fact, the nights become shorter and the days become longer after the occurrence of Lohri in the calendar year in the Indian subcontinent.
So, basically, Lohri is a day which marks the welcoming of the sunny days in the country and it is, thus, celebrated with a bonfire, especially to feel warm after the heavy cold season. Most of the farmers also set their time to cut their crops, and they harvest them for proper storage before selling them right from the day of Lohri.
Moreover, people use various old mantras so that they may get the heat of the Sun during the colder times of the winter weather. There is also a notion that if you worship these mantras, the Sun God will accept your prayers. So, as a result of cultivating this belief, most of families like to go to the temples and pray to God for celebrating this sacred festival.
Additionally, to sum up, it could be mentioned that music and dancing are the two most significant aspects of celebrating the event of Lohri. People even like to dress themselves up with the best of outfits to enjoy the festivities in full bloom. In fact, the people living in the urban portions of the nation also like to go to social clubs; and they participate in parties and various fun games to make the most of the Lohri festival.
