- 2009 Maruti Wagon R was a fairly successful hatchback in the entry level segment. The reason for the success of Wagon R is the low cost and Maruti brand name. Wagon R comes packed with a 1061cc 4 cylinder petrol engine which gives a maximum power of 62 bhp @ 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 84 Nm @ 3500 rpm. It delivered a mileage easily in the range of 13-16 kmpl and had a top speed of 151 kmph. All this at a starting price of 3.5-4 lakhs approx which made it a very affordable option. Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Maruti WagonR (2009)
Some would consider the 2009 model Maruti WagonR as outdated even when it was launched on the market; nevertheless, I have a different viewpoint.
But one of those cars where you wouldn’t look at it and say wow, this is a gorgeous car but you get to know it, and it just makes sense. Needless to say, I know I’ve had my share of friends who were totally obsessed with this little box on wheels and would spend all day parked on a big green hill getting 12 year olds high on the fact that they could control something from their forearm after a few beers. It’s a car that is practical, not flashy — and I’ve come to respect that more and more over time.
Don’t you remember those days of freedom when space and comfort came before all else? That was what the WagonR was built for. Obviously with its tall boy design you get this amazing headroom that makes you feel like you’re in something significantly bigger. The WagonR does not break a sweat whether it’s weaving through city traffic or trudging through narrow lanes.

Wagon R had been the go to option for small families or who was looking for a basic tata car and didn't want to break the bank back in 2009. It was something affordable and accessible: priced between ?3.5 lakh and ?4 lakh. If you're the person looking for a cheap second hand car then you'll still find them today and for a fraction of what they sold for new, making it a good deal for anyone who just need a car that's practical without breaking the bank.
Specs That Matter
Let’s be honest: Nobody’s after the adrenaline rush or speed from the WagonR. Built to be a reliable and no nonsense city runabout. You had a 1.1L petrol engine under the hood which threw out 64 bhp. Thrills weren’t the point—they were about getting you from point A to point B without you having to think about it.
Engine: 1.1L, 4-cylinder petrol
Power: 64 bhp
Torque: 84 Nm
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: The real world claimed approximately numbers of 18 kmpl while the official claims were closer to 20 kmpl.
Mileage: Your Wallet’s Best Friend
Typical Maruti, the WagonR was splendidly economical on the fuel front. Petrol prices just kept going up, and having a car which could do you around 18 kmpl was bliss. If you were commuting to work or running errands, you didn’t have to think too hard about fuel stops, marking it an economical option even for the long haul.
Why the WagonR is simply just that good.
Honestly, the WagonR was never the car you’d drag out to impress anyone but it was perfect for those daily errands or the occasional long drives. The option was easy, unpretentious, in a way that is kind of putting on your favorite sneakers for everything. With 64 bhp under the hood, the 5 speed manual was smooth enough for the city, but you're going to be shifting gears a whole lot. That, however, is part of the WagonR’s charm: It is precisely not trying to be anything it’s not.
Comfort and Features
I was always surprised by how roomy (WagonR) was inside. This wasn’t one of those cars that was bigger on the outside but felt insular inside. The tall design let taller folks stretch out and the back seat had tolerable legroom for a compact.
It didn’t come with much tech or luxury, but it ticked the basics. Having power windows, power steering and a decent audio system all meant you had what you needed to have a comfortable ride. He wasn’t flashy and the car didn’t do anything flashy, it just did its job.
Power Steering: Yes
Air Conditioning: Manual
Power Windows: Front
Infotainment: Radio/CD player audio system.
Quirks that made it fun
Now for some quirks that made the WagonR unique in its own way as opposed to the overused way. Firstly it was a feather light steering city driving was a breeze. It was a little disconnected on the highway, feeling as if you were not really sure what the wheels were doing. The top heavy feeling around corners was the other. It was not exactly a dealbreaker, but it kept you from being too confident on tight bends.
But you know what? Now, these little quirks only made the car more of what it was. And because it wasn’t trying to be perfect, it was so lovable.
Verdict: It’s the 2009 Maruti WagonR. Is it still worth it?
Contrary to popular belief, the 2009 WagonR is actually a very solid bargain if you’re in the market for a second hand city car that will cover the required miles with minimal fuss, but doesn’t care about speed or looks. Yes, it’s got its quirks – it’s like the one friend who refuses to wear shoes when it rains – but it’s reliable, fuel efficient and roomy enough to be a comfortable day to day driver.
