In 2022, Hindustan Motors confirmed that they are working with French automaker Peugeot to bring back the Ambassador with a new design and engine. The design process is already in advanced stages, and the new models will be produced at Hindustans production line in Chennai. This revival aims to restore the iconic status of the Ambassador in the Indian market. I think this could be a great move to revive a piece of Indian automotive history.

In 2017, Hindustan Motors sold the Ambassador brand to the French auto manufacturer Peugeot for Rs 80 crore. This sale included the trademarks and marked a significant shift in the ownership and potential future of the Ambassador. This move sparked hopes of a possible revival of the brand. I believe this change in ownership could bring fresh ideas and technology to the table.

The production of the Ambassador was halted in 2014 due to weak demand, financial issues, and stricter emission norms. Hindustan Motors cited low productivity, indiscipline among workers, and a critical shortage of funds as reasons for suspending work at its Uttarpara plant. I think it was a sad end to an iconic era in Indian automotive history.

By 2013, the Ambassador had complied with BS-IV emission standards with a 1.5L diesel engine, thanks to the collaboration with Austria’s Magna Steyr. This update was crucial for the car to continue serving as taxis in cities like Kolkata. The new engine boosted the power to 48 PS, making it more efficient. I believe these updates were necessary to keep the Ambassador relevant.

In 2010, the Ambassador Grand was launched with several upgrades, including colored body bumpers, camel-colored interiors, fabric seats, and improved suspension with an anti-roll bar. These changes were part of around 130 modifications made to the previous models. The car was developed with the aid of Treves S.A.S. of France. I think these updates were a good attempt to refresh the classic design.
